Government Should Forbid the Same Sex Marriage
The definition of marriage is the legally or formally recognized union of two people as partners in a personal relationship (based on dictionary). Actually, marriage must occur between a man and a woman. In this era, we can know that there are so many issues about marriage. The very debatable one is about same sex marriage. The issue of same sex never recede giving rise to pros and cons. Some agreed because they felt that it was a human right that must be fought for. Meanwhile, those who do not agree consider same-sex marriage contrary to the values of beliefs, norms, and a series of other reasons. The supporter of the legalization of the same-sex marriages are human rights and civil rights organizations as well as the scientific and medical community, while the main opponents are religious people. Some sect communities in the world support same-sex marriage, although many religious groups oppose it. In this essay, I will be the one who is against this. There are some reasons why government should forbid the same sex marriage.
The first reason comes from norms and religion. Pew Research Centers found that at least there are thirty countries that legalize same sex marriage. Proponents of same-sex marriage say, relationships and marriages for two people of the same sex are normal and normal. They believe if gay people do not choose to be born like that. Basically, same-sex marriage and sexual orientation of a person are human rights that have not been brought by humans since they were born. It may work in countries that have liberalism. But in Indonesia, there are so many regulations of norms and religion. According to the 1945 constitution article 28 A to J, Human rights in our country are not unlimited human rights, instead they are limited by the laws, religion and traditions that live in Indonesia. It is really clear that the same sex marriage is forbid by religion and also norms in Indonesia.
Next it comes from the children. We know that every child needs a mother and a father. How if they have two fathers without a mother or two mothers without a father. It can happen when the same sex couple marriage and they want to have a child. They will adopt a child and raise him/her. Sociologist Steven Nock from the University of Virginia offered a review about same sex marriage that said children that raised by a same sex marriage couple have so many problems. They just get the high possibility to get bullied by their friends about their parents. Because of the impact of that case, the children will face depression. They start to ask why their family is different from others or why they have two fathers and don’t have mothers. This condition will make the children unable to accept themselves. Not only that, they also have potential to experience gender and sexual disorders. Lesbian parenting may free daughters and sons from a broad but uneven range of traditional gender prescriptions (Judith Stacey, a Sociologist and advocate for same sex civil marriage). Based on the study we can conclude that sons of lesbians are less masculine and that daughters of lesbians are more masculine. Based on those arguments we can conclude that the children with a same sex parents probably face so many problems in their life.
In addition, this is strongly opposed by the social community. Most people reject the existence of LGBT, especially around the home environment. Based on a survey conducted by Tirto and Jakpat, Indonesians described LGBT as a social disease (58.48 percent) and mental illness (21.34 percent). The general public sees the existence of LGBT as a negative, abnormal, and wrong thing. It is considered scary because it is associated with sexual deviations and the resulting disease (HIV). It is clear if the same sex couple getting married, they will get rejection and also mockery. Many people in our country said that this is so embarrassing. The rejection and view is based on religious teachings which are followed largely by the people in Indonesia and also because there is a strong assumption that Indonesia is a religious state. Society generally provides criticism and away from all social activities (exclusion). How can a couple live in the middle of social isolation and hatred. Most of the people consider that LGBT is a psychiatric disease that must be eliminated. At the end we can say that same sex marriage is a difficult thing for society to accept.
LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) is an acronym that is familiar to Indonesian people and it becomes the center of attention not only for the community but also for government. At the beginning of the 21st century, the Netherlands became the first country to legalize gay marriage and later other countries began to follow in the footsteps of the Netherlands, so that in 2019 there were thirty countries that had legalized this. The International Human Rights Law and Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity have two main principles, namely equality and non-discrimination. This is can be the reason why there are so many countries that legalized same sex marriage. But Indonesia and several other countries stand firmly unable to accept LGBT in their respective countries. As mentioned above, there are several reasons this cannot be applied in Indonesia. The most important reason comes from norms and religion. LGBT is clearly forbidden by religion and is also opposed by norms and customary practices that apply in Indonesia. This is a strong reason why same-sex marriages cannot be legalized in this country. Not only that, same-sex marriage will also cause a lot of insults among the surrounding community because they think this is a very disturbing thing. As a one of social community, I also disagree and strongly oppose the same-sex marriages.
